What causes subacromial impingement? There are many causes of shoulder impingement but if the rotator cuff is weak or injured, or if there is a build up of bone on the under the surface of the acromion (sometimes referred to as a bone spur), inflammation can occur within the subacromial bursa. Subacromial bursitis is a condition caused by inflammation of the bursa that separates the superior surface of the supraspinatus tendon (one of the four tendons of the rotator cuff) from the overlying coraco-acromial ligament, acromion, and coracoid (the acromial arch) and from the deep surface of the deltoid muscle. Subacromial impingement occurs when the tendons of the shoulder joint (or rotator cuff) are injured as they glide against the bones and ligaments of the shoulder. More specifically, the rotator cuff tendons can rub against the acromion process during overhead activities which can lead to pain and degeneration of the tendons. Subacromial impingement syndrome (SIS) er en af de hyppigste årsager til skuldersmerter i befolkningen, og kan forårsage langvarige skuldersmerter og nedsat skulderfunktion, der forringer livskvaliteten væsentligt [1–3].

Subacromial pain is the term used in this thesis because it refers to pain arising from the structures located in the subacromial space. Many terms have been used to describe subacromial pain and pathology, including subacromial impingement syndrome, rotator cuff tendinopathy, subacromial bursitis, supraspinatus Impingementsyndrom, eller kun impingement, også kalt "subakromialt smertesyndrom", supraspinatus-syndrom eller svømmerskulder, er et klinisk syndrom i skulderen. Subacromial impingement

Shoulder impingement syndrome is a syndrome involving tendonitis of the rotator cuff muscles as they pass through the subacromial space, the passage beneath the acromion. It is particularly associated with tendonitis of the supraspinatus muscle. This can result in pain, weakness, and loss of movement at the shoulder. subacromial impingement aetiology.mp4 The four muscles that raise and lower the arm (and their respective tendons) are collectively known as the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff lies under the roof of the shoulder (an extension of the shoulder blade known as the acromion).

Subacromial spurs. Type 2 and type 3 acromions. Osteoarthritic spurs of acromioclavicular joint (includes subacromial spurs) Thickened or calcified coracoacromial ligament. This is often called subacromial impingement because of the location of impingement occurs between the rotator cuff and the undersurface of the acromion, hence the term “subacromial.” This is also called the bursal side of the rotator cuff because there is a bursa located between the rotator cuff and the acromion, which acts as a shock Subacromial impingement.

Some examples include, but are not limited to, rotator cuff tendinosis (irritation of the muscle to bone connection), tears of the rotator cuff (partial or full tear of muscle to bone connection), and bursitis (inflammation of the fluid filled sacs that surround Background: Structured exercise has been reported as the current treatment of choice for patients diagnosed with subacromial impingement syndrome (SIS). However, it has been suggested that this diagnostic term and the language used to explain this condition might negatively influence patient expectations and serve as a barrier to engagement with exercise, hence compromising clinical outcomes. Subacromial impingement should not be diagnosed solely off a plain radiograph and should be considered clinically 1; this particular case was clinically correlated and diagnosed. Physical examination includes the investigation of three signs fir Subacromial Impingement Syndrome (SAIS) has been considered as the most common cause of shoulder pain since it was described in 1852. Charles Neer, in 1972, described the presence of a "proliferative spur and ridge" on the undersurface of the acromion, which needs to be removed to improve the symptoms (acromioplasty).
